Sandwiched between the House of Musical Traditions, a town mainstay since 1972, and local radio station WOWD-LP, this little corner of downtown serves as a triptych of the cultural inclinations of the “ hippiest city in Maryland.” Welcome to People’s Book, an independent bookstore that opened this past June in Takoma Park. Launched in February 2011, Busboys and Poets presents a monthly Book Club for lively and thought-provoking discussions with a wide array of books surrounding social conscience and artistic sensibilities. The first meeting will take place on September 29th, 2019. The James Baldwin Book Club will meet on the fourth Sunday of every month between 9 AM and 11 AM at the Takoma Park location. Each month we will select a book or an essay by James Baldwin and couple it with contemporary writers in the same genre. We will use his writings as a springboard for deep conversations around race, identity, politics and other matters that may arise and the Club would like to explore. His writings are just as fresh and relevant today around current issues facing America. The James Baldwin Book Club is inspired by the extensive writings of James Baldwin exploring topics of race and democracy.
